Executive Summary
An online post office is planning to manufacture a household version of postage meters found in offices. The main risks of the project are high rivalry competition, the dependence on suppliers, and customers’ preferences. The product is new for household market, so we take risk by introducing it. By analyzing the marketing, sourcing, regulatory, technical, management constraints and opportunities, we come to conclusion that the main constraints are technical requirements, investments, HR resources, materials, and equipment provided by suppliers and Canadian regulations. They can increase the costs of the project. In order to overcome the main competitors in postage meters manufacturing, the company should apply a mix business model including low-cost model, the direct sales model, and the “cut out the middle man” model.
Business Case: Post Office
Introduction
Our company, an online post office, is planning to manufacture a household version of postage meters found in offices. A postage meter is a device that is used to “apply physical evidence of postage to mailed matter” (Logic eEngineer Pvt, 2010). The machine would be used for printing necessary postage on an envelope or on special labels attached to huge packages. For the last decades postage meters have become more and more popular in business due to their convenience and flexibility. First of all, postage meters give people an opportunity to use it 24 hours every day (Canada Post Corporation, 2016). Business prints postage for letters, personalized mails, invoices and other papers (Canada Post Corporation, 2016).
Then, it is easy in use and can be easily reloaded online or with the help of meter’s supplier (Canada Post Corporation, 2016). Besides, postage meters help people save money, since the costs for use of metered postage are cheaper than the costs for single stamps (Canada Post Corporation, 2016). It is easier to control the costs for post and do accounting by using postage meters (Canada Post Corporation, 2016). What is more, it gives an opportunity to send any quantity of mailing at any price with the same postage meter (USPS, 2016). Finally, it adds more value to mail. However, a household version of postage meters is rather a new direction of business. In our project we will discuss the scope of the project including marketing, technological, sourcing, regulatory, management, and other risks, build a business model for the opportunity, brainstorm and document the requirements, and develop a solution for business.
Scope of the project
Marketing
Four “P” marketing mix is applied for the development of the marketing strategy for the new project. The product will be a household version of postage meters. The postage meters will be of small size, since they should not take much place at home. They will be targeted for low print needs (about 20-100 letters per month) (Postage Meter Rental, 2015). …
