This means that; it is reactive enough to burn in an environment that has Carbon Dioxide. The result of the reaction will be combustion and oxidation. The unique thing about Magnesium fire is that it is reactive enough to be oxidized and combusted in the presence of Carbon Dioxide. The reaction will be as follows:2Mg+CO2=2MgO+CThe reason as to why CO2 fire extinguishers work is the fire is smothered using carbon dioxide. However, in this case, it will not be effective because the carbon dioxide in itself is used as a fuel source (Arthur E. Cote, 2003). Met-L-X is a class D fire extinguishing agent and therefore can be used to stop various metal fires such as Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, and Sodium-Potassium alloy. This dry powder fire extinguishing agent is comprised of a salt base and a polymer that are used for sealing purposes. There are other additives that are in this fire extinguishing agent that make it to be free-flowing and cause what is known as heat-caking. This helps deny the burning metal, in this case Magnesium access to Oxygen. Water should not be used to clean any Magnesium residue that has been left on the car. The reason for this is that; the hot Magnesium residues will react violently with water and rekindle the fire. This is because the heat of the Magnesium will decompose the water to its various elements and then ignite the fire again. The reaction is as follows:Mg+H2O=MgO+H2In this reaction, Magnesium will separate the water elements to Hydrogen and Oxygen. It will combine with the Oxygen, and this will rekindle the fire, and it will liberate the Hydrogen element that was in the water (Robert E. In this reaction, it will involve a combination of both the Hydrogen and the Hydroxyl ions in order to generate water (Myers, 2003). In the chemical reaction, when a strong acid reacts with a strong base, it will result to a pH level that is equal to 7. When the neutralization reaction involves a strong acid and a weak base it will result to a pH that is less than 7. If the reaction involves a strong base and a weak acid the pH will be greater than 7. In this case, acetic acid is a weak acid, while the air slaked lime is a strong base, and therefore the pH will be greater than 7.
