Organizing International Logistics and Operations Performance

This study explores international logistics and operations performance discussing the process perspectives of operations management. This coursework includes two parts and evaluates the strategic contribution of operations management and international logistics to support of business goals. First part of the study discusses operational process of IKEA using the input-transformation-output model. The relative importance of the performance objectives of the process is represented in the study and the deployment of technology in the operational process based on the performance objectives is assessed in this chapter.Second part of the paper includes the discussion of the case study. According to the conditions of the case study, the supply-chain from overseas to Europe is required to be organized. Thus, the actual supply-chain of the networking organization is analyzed in this study. A brief introduction to the product’s supply chain is given and the challenges and issues related to logistics networks are outlined. The aim of this chapter is to suggest the possible ways of improvement for the supply chain. Thus replacing the international suppliers with local ones is discussed, and advantages and disadvantages of each supply chain are outlined. The aim of this coursework is to demonstrate understanding of the process perspective of operations management and to model an organization in terms of individual processes.

Operations management determines the way how organizations produce goods or services. Thus every product and every service comes to the consumers due to the operations managers who organized the process of production. The operations management is related to challenges, tasks and decisions of the managers which determine the success of production (Slack, Chambers & Johnston 2010, p.2).IKEA is considered to be one of the most successful and the biggest furniture retailers. The company operates 330 stores with approximately 154,000 co-workers worldwide and it is familiar for its unique approach in selling furniture. IKEA’s business concept lies in providing low-priced furniture that is affordable to the wide range of consumers (Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2013). The IKEA’s concept began with Ingvar Kamprad’s innovative idea of offering well-designed and functioning home furniture for much lower prices in comparison to the competitors. Using the simple solutions to cut prices without any negative impact on quality of the products, the company creates its competitive advantage and implements the strategy of cost leadership.
