Social Marketing Scoping Report: Nursing Research in Australia

Executive Summary

Whenever nursing is concerned, it is traditionally considered to be a medical profession with a narrower scope of practice and lower level of prescriber authority. Specialists of this category are most widely serve as medical employees who do not make any contribution into the development of research in medical science. However, simultaneously nurses have direct access to patients in personal and social medical situations, and have access to the dimension of information to which other higher ranked health professionals do not. This unique advantage could serve as a positive influence on medical science once nurses could be engaged into the scope of overall scientific research. In addition, same tools could serve as professional enhancers for the social group of nurses which could add up ambition and sophistication to their career paths. Furthermore, wider inclusion of nurses into the framework of empirical research could serve as an instrument of increasing social mobility due to the increasing levels of nurses’ expertise.

Background of the Social Issue

Continuing professional development (CPD) is a concept which is closely associated with the nursing profession. This deficit can be effectively covered by prevalence of nursing research. According to the most recent reports on the state of affairs in Australia (Katsikitis, 2013), it has to be mentioned that since 2012 CPD expectations on the nursing profession require that nursing employees should present a professional portfolio in the framework of the registration processes. Researchers in the field, however, claim that while these …
