Film Analysis"Pursuit of Happyness" (2006)
Director: Gabriele Muccino
Leading Cast Members: Will Smith, Thandie Newton, Jaden Smith
“Pursuit of Happiness” is a story about a single parent, who lives at a “social bottom”. Chris Gardner (Will Smith) doesn’t have a regular well-paid job. He buys a number of densitometers, but regrets doing this, as their cost is extremely high, and medical organizations refuse to buy them. His wife Linda (Thandie Newton) leaves the family on the ground of financial problems, and having a few dollars in his pockets he cannot pay for rent, that is why he has to live in the overnight shelter for homeless people. It might be much more difficult for Kris to overcome the hardship and poverty if not for his 5-year old son Christofer (Jaden Smith). Kris has a life goal – to make his son happy, and he takes rough with the smooth (Sony Pictures).
Will Smith perfectly plays a role of a real person. Beforehand, this actor has appeared only in comedies, such as “Bad Boys” (1995) and “Men in Black” (1997) etc. (IMDb).Although the personality of the main character draws a lot of attention, it is love that appears to be the main thing in this story. Smith’s character seems to be a perfect father. Every his word and deed expresses the boundless fatherly love. In the most rugged moments, he makes the best of things. Suffice it to mention the night in the underground toilet, when they are “hiding from the dinosaurs”. A small boy, always holding his father’s hand, is not a carefree child, as he knows the feeling of disappointment.
Despite his young age and starring in a film for the first time, Jaden Smith gets into a role. This kid is born to be an actor; he gives zest to the film. The fact that Jaden Smith is the son of Will Smith in the real life is an enormous boon for the film (IMDb). They love each other, and they show their love, making you believe the story. The tired woman, who has to work double shift, is Kris’s wife Linda. Linda shows neither affection, nor care towards her husband and son. She doesn’t appreciate her husband's struggling to get out of poverty. Family rows on the ground of money become a habit. With every passing day, she is losing belief that everything will be okay, and the feeling of despair overwhelms her. She cannot withstand the difficulties and leaves the family. Does it mean that she doesn’t love her closest people? No, it doesn’t. Her love can be seen from what she feels when she is parting from them. Just unlike Chris, Linda is a weak person, who can be broken down by the circumstances.
Thandie Newton did her best in playing the part of a disappointed woman, who doesn’t have enough will and desire to go against the stream. Thandie and Will show the …
